Hey hackers!

It was so great to finally meet many of you in person during our last meeting! We loved getting to know each of you and were thrilled by the amazing turnout—there were even more members than we expected, which was awesome! We hope to see you all continue to join us in future meetings. We also hope you enjoyed the little treats and stickers as a thank-you for being part of our very first gathering last week. Let’s keep the energy going and make this a fantastic year together!

Week Zero Recap

We had a brief presentation which introduced the Officer Board, explained what BLS Hack Club does, and presented an overview of the possible workshops for this school year. But, most importantly, we voted after the presentation on which workshops y’all found the most interesting and fun! The results of which are shown below. From the poll, it is clear that we will be starting with our Sprig workshops this year :)

What’s Sprig?

Sprig is a game editor, game engine/handheld gaming console all built by Hack Club.

Sprig is an awesome tool to get started in programming! Sprig uses the JavaScript programming language, which is one of the most popular in the world. By coding games in Sprig, you'll get familiar with the language used to code many of the world's websites, apps, and games. Additionally, many of the concepts you'll learn are applicable to all of programming. And, most importantly, you’ll be able to get your own console by the end of the workshops!

We want to stress that no programming experience is required and we invite everyone to come to the workshops :)

Low Skies

THE SKY IS FALLING! And in the distance, large swaths of seemingly knight-themed items rain down castles... hardware... currency... and are those dragons???

LOW SKIES: Hack Club’s two-week event where you build, battle, and power up!How this works:

  1. Work on personal projects! Use Hackatime to keep track of amount of time spent.

  2. Enter finished projects into the Thunderdome! When you ship your project, it will battle against other projects, as you and your peers vote between them in 1v1 matchups.

  3. Once your project has done ten battles, you'll get scales (taken straight from... your opponent's dragon?) based on how many hours you spent on it—and how it performed in the Thunderdome. Spends scales in the Shoppe for rewards, from Blahajs to Yubikeys!

The Boba Manor

This Spoopy October, OnBoard is launching Trick or Trace, a Halloween-themed PCB design contest! If you’ve already taken part in OnBoard, or have never heard of it before, everyone is being given the opportunity to design a PCB and have it shipped, even if you've already used up your OnBoard grant.

  • Build a board & ship your design, submissions open Oct 6th. Not sure what to build? Maybe make something spooky !

  • Submit your project and receive a special branded electronics accessory kit.

  • Vote on your favorite projects in the showcase gallery!

Top-voted submissions get an unrestricted $100 grant (not vendor-locked like OnBoard grants) to fab their PCB, buy parts, tools, and just in time for the Halloween season! So get started, create, update & upgrade your circuit board and showcase it to all.

Check out the list of submission requirements and rules at trickortrace.hackclub.com. Submissions close mid-October. Visit #trick-or-trace or its FAQ section if you have questions.
